Arthur Judson Spaulding, of Lincoln, formerly of Harvard, born on January 29, 1929 passed away
peacefully on January 8, 2015.
Art (also known as Jud) grew up in Mendota, IL and graduated from the
University of Illinois in 1951. He left small town life to travel the
world with the Army from 1952 to 1955, stationed primarily in Berlin,
Germany working for the Army Security Agency. After attending the
University of Illinois for a year of post-graduate studies he took a
job working for the National Security Agency (NSA) as a German
cryptanalyst.
While at NSA he met his wife, Marie DiBenedetto, a Russian
cryptanalyst. They were married in 1958, left NSA in 1960 and
eventually settled in on a 40 acre farm in Harvard, MA in 1978. A&M
Orchards (A&M standing for Art & Marie) was a Pick Your Own (PYO)
apple orchard and farm that the two built together from the ground up
with lots of love, sweat and old fashioned grit and determination.
At the age of two and a half, Miriam, their niece came to live with
them. Miriam loved everything about farm life - from the daily ritual
of picking up the eggs with her Uncle to taking care of all of the
animals. Art used to joke that his identity around town was known
solely as "Miriam's Uncle", however that is far from the truth – she
was always first and foremost "Arthur's daughter".
Arthur is survived by his wife, Marie Spaulding, niece, Miriam
Talamini, two sisters, Etta Garnet Johansen and Esther Joyce Hickey
and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held in the spring.
Donations in his memory can be made to: Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan
Street, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
