Obituary

Anthony Pickman of Lincoln, MA passed away on February 20, 2015 at the age of 98. He was born in Boston on March 17th, 1916, the eldest son of Edward M. Pickman and Hester M. Pickman. Tony was the beloved husband of the late Alice Page (Loring) Pickman, to whom he had been married for 67 years when he lost her in 2008. He leaves his children, Daisy Welch, Allan Pickman and his wife Robin Downes, Caroline Husher and her husband Eric Husher, and Helen Husher. Tony is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Jason Welch and his wife Suzanne, Jessica Welch and her husband James Maguire, Nicholas Husher, and Alex Pickman. In addition, Tony leaves great grandson Hollis Welch. Tony graduated in 1935 from Phillips Exeter Academy, and went on to graduate from Harvard College in 1939 with a degree in Philosophy. During the war Tony gained piloting skills through his time Western U.S. at studying at the Boeing School of Aeronautics, and working at United Airlines. He went on work at Bendix Radio during the War, and MIT Lincoln Labs before settling into a career at Peter Gray Corp in Cambridge, MA. Tony's love of sailing began as a child, sailing on the Concord River in Bedford MA and later on he spent years sailing the waters of the North Shore, and cruising the Maine Coast. Tony was dedicated to the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, where he served as President and Trustee for many years, overseeing the building of the E.M. Pickman Concert Hall in honor of his father. Tony also committed to improving conditions in Roxbury, MA, founding a small business development center and skills bank. In addition to his life in the business world, Tony helped his wife Alice with the dairy cows, running Deep Winter Farm on Dudley Road in Bedford, MA. In 1962, Tony and Alice settled into their beloved home on Farrar Pond in Lincoln, MA. Tony spent many happy years on his tractor, riding horses, working in his wife's gardens and greenhouses, making music with his flute, and entertaining friends and family. A celebration of his life will be planned this spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Longy School of Music.
