Obituary

Anne Van Vleck Webb, a landscape designer, conservationist and farmer died on September 9th at age 87. She was a longtime resident of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts and raised her family in Belmont, Massachusetts.

Anne will be remembered as graceful and poised, quietly majestic, with a glint of mischief and wonder in her eyes. Her passion for the world of plants and architecture, and often for the combination of the two, brought her joy both privately and professionally.

While raising her three daughters, Anne earned a Certificate in Landscape and Environmental Design from the Radcliffe Institute and started a small landscape design practice. Alongside her husband Roger at Architectural Heritage Foundation, Anne helped to strategize and support the preservation of the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Boston's Old City Hall and numerous other historic structures in Boston and New Bedford Massachusetts.

The project closest to Anne's heart was the creation of the Apponagansett Bay Vineyard on an old dairy farm in South Dartmouth, MA. In 1980, she purchased the 125 acre property at a time when the dairy industry was struggling in Southeastern Massachusetts, and planted 25 acres of wine grapes to support the growing wine-making community in the area. She eventually moved an 1800 farmhouse slated for demolition to the property and made the vineyard her home. It was here that Anne found great satisfaction embedding herself in the seasonal cycles of the vineyard and adjacent salt marsh. Anne made every space that she inhabited welcoming and quietly beautiful, often enlivened with the perfect sprouting branch or flower brought in from outdoors.

Anne was committed to preserving the cultural and agricultural character of her community. She served as board member of The Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, The New Bedford Whaling Museum, WHALE and The Massachusetts 4H Foundation.

Anne was born in 1936 in Montclair, New Jersey, the daughter of Howard and Harriet Tomlinson Van Vleck. She was the eldest of four siblings, Carolyn, Howard and Roy. She earned a bachelor's degree in art history in 1958 from Smith College. She is survived by her children Rebecca Webb of Belmont MA, Mariana Webb and Sean McDonnell of Cambridge, Ruth Webb and Matthew Bellows of Cambridge, and grandchildren Peter and Austin Heye, Kate, Margaret and Claire McDonnell, Anna, Nelson and Roy Bellows, her brother Roy Van Vleck of Lyme NH, as well as beloved nieces and nephews.
