Anne Thomas Sears, 96, the beloved wife of Douglas Hubbard Sears for 74 years, died peacefully in her Concord home on Sunday, August 13, 2017, with her family by her side.
Born in Waltham, Mass on March 19, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Reginald and Sally (Wyman) Thomas. She was Valedictorian of the class of 1938 at Waltham High School, and received her undergraduate degree in Zoology from Wellesley College in 1942. Mrs. Sears previously resided in Detroit, MI and worked for Henry Ford Hospital. She also lived in Saco, ME where her husband was formerly employed.
In 1958, they purchased a home on Barnes Hill Road in Concord, and lived there happily for the past 59 years. She was a member of the Concord Garden Club, Women's Tuesday Club, P.E.O., and served as a director of Garden in the Woods in Framingham. For 35 years, she was instrumental in organizing the Boston Symphony Bus, which transported people from Concord and surrounding towns to Symphony Hall concerts.
In her sixties, Mrs. Sears became certified in scuba diving, and completed over five hundred deep-sea dives in oceans, seas, and reefs around the world. While diving, she frequently collected specimens for the Boston Aquarium. As an amateur underwater photographer, she enjoyed extensive traveling with her husband over the years. Her knowledge and photography of local wildflowers led her to present numerous talks around Concord, including at First Parish and Newbury Court. The lectures would also include cultural aspects of the many places she had traveled.
She was a proud wife, mother, and grandmother who dedicated her life to the people she loved most, and the new friends she met in her travels. In addition to her husband, she leaves behind three children, Douglas W. Sears and his wife Suzanne of Tewksbury, Deborah Sears Wyndham of Radford, VA, and Pamela Sears-Rogan, M.D. and her husband Kevin of Potomac, MD, and five grandchildren, Douglas W. Sears, Jr., Rebecca Anne Sears, Michael Kevin Rogan, Katherine Anne Roberts, M.D. and her husband Austin, and Timothy Christopher Rogan.
A memorial service at First Parish in Concord will be announced at a later date. Private burial will take place at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Garden in the Woods, 180 Hemenway Rd, Framingham, MA 01701.
Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
