Obituary

Anne Bixby Chamberlin Newbury, 100, died quietly at Kendal at Hanover, NH her home for 20 years, on Tuesday, June 28, 2011. Anne was born at home in Concord, Massachusetts on June 17, 1911, the fifth daughter of Dr. Theodore and Anne Bixby Chamberlin's eight children. She lived there for 80 years before moving to Hanover, NH. She attended the Montessori School and graduated from Concord Academy in 1929, both schools being founded by her mother. She went on to graduate from National School of Education in Evanston, Illinois in 1933. Anne began her teaching at Buckingham School in Cambridge, MA and felt very fortunate to have gained a teaching position during the depression. Thus began a life-long interest in the quality of education for young children. Anne was married to Egbert S. Newbury, Jr. on November 5, 1938. Her energies were then devoted to being a wife, raising their four children, being actively involved with her extended family, her town, and her neighborhood. She took particular delight in volunteering at the Deaconess Home, brought to Concord by her father, and in contributing the family land along Spencer Brook Valley to the Concord Land Conservation Trust, which her husband helped to found. Anne always surrounded her homes with beautiful gardens and landscaping, while keeping an open house for her extended family and friends. Her special talent for friendships kept her home busy with friends across the generations, even after her children had moved away from home. She was predeceased by her husband in 1985, and her son-in-law Donald Andresen in 1997, and her five sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her children, Nancy of Norwich, VT; David of Northampton, MA and East Thetford, VT; Sam of Pittsburgh, PA; and William of Brooklyn, NY; along with her daughters-in-law Catharine, Janice and Priscilla. Her six grandchildren, Elizabeth Newbury; Caroline Andresen; David Newbury; Susanna, Sophia and Cordelia Newbury; and her two step-grandchildren Karen and Christian Andresen. Also many nieces and nephews, among them Gilbert M. Roddy Jr. of Concord. The family wishes to give special thanks for the care given to their mother in the Health Center at Kendal. At Anne\'s request, there will be no formal services. At a later date with a small family gathering, she will be buried in the family plot at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in her beloved town of Concord. Dee Funeral Home of Concord will be in charge of the arrangements as they have been for generations of both the Newbury and Chamberlin families.
