Obituary

Ann Medora Williams Flynn, 87, wife of the late John Joseph Flynn Jr. and mother of eight children, died peacefully at her home in Concord early Wednesday morning. Born in Burlington, Vt., a daughter of the late Albert and Madeleine (Schweig) Williams, she grew up in Greenfield, Mass., and Portsmouth, N.H., but had her strongest ties to Underhill, Vt., where her grandparents and parents had a home and where she and her family spent summers and vacations throughout her youth. Summer vacation in Underhill was a tradition she carried on with her own growing family after marriage. After graduating from Portsmouth High School and the University of New Hampshire on an accelerated academic schedule with a bachelor's degree in business administration, she served in the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve in Washington D.C. during the final years of World War II. After the war, she graduated from the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston and was employed by Canadian Steamship Lines. She had met her future husband in Washington D.C. and they moved to Concord two years after marrying in 1948. Throughout the 1950s until the mid-1960s, she devoted herself to her husband and children as a homemaker. In the tightly knit Central Street neighborhood of West Concord, her care often extended to other children as well. Returning to employment, she first worked as a clerk at the West Concord Shoe Store for approximately 10 years and then as a clerk at the West Concord Five & Ten for 33 years before retiring at the age of 85 in 2009. Many people fondly remembered buying shoes, toys and penny candy from her as children, only to return years later with their own children to the Five & Ten and finding her as personable and gracious as ever with the same generous smile. In her spare time, she loved to go for walks in places like the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, along the Battle Road and at Mount Misery in Lincoln. She was an avid reader and loved playing Whist and Bridge with her many friends. She was always a source of strength and selfless support for her family and friends. She was loved and cherished by her three daughters, Kathleen Ann Flynn of Boston, Madeleine Mary Tanguay of South Yarmouth and Faith Helen Regan of Boxford; five sons, John Joseph "Sean" Flynn III of Tiverton, RI, Christopher Flynn of Blacksburg, Va., Michael Delano Flynn of Maynard, Peter Albert Flynn of Concord and Timothy Burdick Flynn of Concord; a sister, Faith Williams Donaghue of Wisconsin; four granddaughters and six grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Elizabeth Williams Beckwith of Underhill, Vermont and sister-in-law of the late Katherine Helen Flynn Garrett of Newburyport. Ann will be greatly missed for her grace, beauty, generosity, optimism and youthful spirit.
