Obituary

CONCORD – Ann Clarke (Soper) Davidson, 85, of Concord, died Tuesday, April 12, 2016. She was the beloved wife of the late Harold Stewart Davidson. They were married in Boston on June 6, 1959. Ann was born in Manhattan on June 19, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Ellis Clarke and Ruth Elizabeth (Turner) Soper, and sister of the late Mary Ellis (Soper) Dunivant. She attended Ladycliff Academy in Highland Falls, New York, from which she was graduated in 1948. She was granted a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Park College in Parkville, Missouri in 1952, and a Master of Education degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1959, where she met Hal. Ann was a life-long teacher. Through the 1950's she taught at elementary schools in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Hanover, New Hampshire and West Hartford, Connecticut. Ann and Hal moved to Concord in 1963 with their two daughters, and she began working as a substitute teacher in the public schools. In 1971 she began a full time position, teaching first grade and later second grade at the Alcott School, and then fifth grade at the Willard School. She also served as a supervisor of student teachers at Simmons College in the Department of Education's teacher certification program. She spent the last 15 years of her career teaching seventh grade English at the Peabody and Sanborn Middle Schools. She retired from teaching in 1997. Always active on social issues, Ann received special recognition from the Massachusetts Department of Education and the office of then Governor Michael Dukakis for developing curricula "that focus on historical and contemporary women from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural groups." She was also recognized by the Southern Poverty Law Center for her "important contribution to the ongoing fight against hatred and intolerance in America." Ann was an ardent Red Sox fan and longtime member of the Concord Country Club where she was an avid golfer. She attended Trinity Episcopal Church where she was an active member of the Altar Guild and sang in the choir. A classically trained soprano and opera lover, she enjoyed performing in local musical productions and was a member of the Concord Chorus, the Lexington Choral Society and the Concord Music Club. Ann was also a member of the Concord Democratic Town Committee, the National Education Association, the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the Concord Teachers Association where she served as president for ten years. Survivors include her two daughters, Katherine Ann Davidson of Plymouth, Elizabeth Stewart Davidson and husband Mark of Weston, and grandsons, Sam, Max and Henry. A memorial service will be held in the Trinity Episcopal Church, Elm Street, Concord on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 4:00pm.
