Andrew Keil, of Concord, MA, died January 29, 2016 in Boston, MA.
Andrew graduated from Concord-Carlise High School in 2000. He then attended the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, and graduated with a BA degree in Biology. His degree studies focused on marine life, land species, and microbiology. His did research on scallops, immunology, and oceanography out of Woods Hole.
Andrew was a kind, generous, loving human being who gave to others unconditionally. He always saw the good in people and had strong bonds with family and friends. He was interested and took pride in family history. He was someone people could count on, whenever, and a person anyone could relate to easily. He made everyone comfortable. He was deeply reflective and thoughtful, and strove to understand his friends and family, giving each what might be best.
Andrew had a zest for life and adventure, especially anything outdoors. Whether hiking, rock climbing, biking, sailing, kayaking, or participating in triathlons, a charity event, or a tough mudder with friends, he could be found outdoors in any season. He was mentally and physically strong to push through any outdoor adventure and considered himself a survivalist. He climbed the highest mountains in the Northeast up to Canada and the California Sierras. He climbed three mountain ridgelines in one day while "only eating a cheeseburger." Andrew routinely helped strangers in need, whether on the trail or on the road. He had a unique, wacky, off-beat sense of humor, boisterous laugh, and was fun to be with. He took an interest in seemingly weird, odd things, and often approached situations from a unique perspective.
Andrew had a wide range of talents and interests. He was very smart and had a scientific and creative mind. He had encyclopedic knowledge. He was good at drawing from a very young age. He developed a passion for photography and documenting everything in life--big and small. He wrote poems, humorous stories, and vignettes. He enjoyed the arts, creative drawing, and always had music playing--all types of music. He was an avid movie-goer, loved quoting movies, and wrote critical reviews which he posted online. To quote Andrew, his purpose was to "focus on honest reviews, that are funny but accurate, and don't give any spoiler details." He had fun sharing old classic games and movies with friends and family. Andrew was an excellent, creative cook, always without recipes, and often with spicy sauces. He loved sharing a new creation and cookouts with friends. Recently, he developed an interest in wood-working, furniture-making, and refurbishing old radios.
Andrew is survived by parents Lynne Schmelz and Mitchell Keil; step-mother Lisa Cooper-Keil; sister Meghan Keil and husband Jeff Corey; sister Ariana Keil; loving girlfriend Kirsten Thuestad; grandmother Agnes Keil; great uncle Richard Schmelz; and uncles Eric Keil and Barton Keil and wife Debbie.
Andrew had many friends and loyal followers. We miss him desperately. There was so much more in life for him--to live, experience, and do. He is gone too soon.
The memorial service for Andrew will be held in Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street, Concord, MA, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 13.
Donations in memory of Andrew can be made to the Nature Conservancy, the Wilderness Society, or other charitable organizations supporting the environment and nature. Thank you.
