IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alison Fay
Wentworth
September 9, 1953 – August 21, 2025
Alison Fay Wentworth, known to many as "Auntie", passed peacefully August 21, 2025, age 71, with family by her side. Alison lived in Watertown, MA most of her life until moving to her very own condominium in Canton, Massachusetts where she made many new friends.
She leaves behind a large family tree of loved ones beginning with her three surviving siblings Leonard Wentworth, Wayne Wentworth, and Laurel Zolfonoon and three siblings who predeceased her Warren Wentworth Jr, Lorraine Wentworth, and Gerald Wentworth together with their spouses and many, many multi-generational nieces and nephews. Alison was a uniquely loving human who made and retained life-long friends whom she considered to be her family, as well.
Alison (Ally, later spelled Ali) was born September 9, 1953 in Waltham, Massachusetts. At the time, she was the youngest of four children to Warren and Edith Wentworth of Watertown, Massachusetts but later become the loving and protective older sister to three more siblings.
Because of her keen intelligence, her deafness was not diagnosed until she was three when, with the use of a hearing aid, she heard for the first time. She was fascinated with the sound of the wooden "spoon" scrape the bottom of her "hoodsie" ice cream cup. She attended the Whittemore school for the Deaf for many years and then enrolled in public schools. She was able to read peoples' lips so well that often people did not realize her handicap.
Born with hearing loss, she became completely deaf in 2016. The next year, she bravely underwent surgery to implant a cochlear implant. This meant that she had to re-learn how to hear as this new technology signaled sounds quite differently from a hearing aid. For the first time in her life, she could hear words without having to read lips. The technology advanced to allow for Bluetooth access and just this year, she was able to hear music for the first time.
Her first professional job was at Carters in Needham where she was a keypunch operator. The company was at first concerned about her handicap in a professional work place. Her dedication, skill, and loyalty was so profound that they initiated a plan to hire more deaf people. She was an incredibly loyal employee and stayed in positions until the company or branch closed or relocated.
Her last employment was Dedham Savings Bank from which she retired two years ago. She processed loans. This was an exciting career change for her that was made possible by the bank accommodating her hearing loss by reassigning duties such that she was not required to use the telephone. She loved this new role, thrived in it, and made many new friends.
Alison survived three unrelated cancers and has been managing Grave's (hypothyroidism) for years. Due to complications of this disease and her heart function, she was admitted to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital last Tuesday. She and the team of incredible specialists fought to control a "thyroid storm" which, with an underlying heart condition, caused her organs to fail. She and the team fought bravely for 48 hours.
Her friends and family remember her loving dedication, her kindness and caring, and her fun sense of humor. She loved walking along the ocean, especially on Cape Cod. She loved perusing gift shops and craft fairs for unique and thoughtful gifts. She loved dinners out, tea with milk, and especially "high tea" occasions. Mostly, she loved time spent with her friends and family.
The family is holding a funeral service on Sunday, August 24 beginning at 1 pm at the Dee Funeral Home 27 Bedford Street, Concord, MA followed by a procession and burial service at The Knoll section of the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, 361 Bedford Street, Concord, MA.
You are welcome to make a donation in her memory to the American Thyroid Association or American Heart Association .
Arrangements are entrusted to Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
