Obituary

Alice "Nana" A. (Power) Murphy of Newtonville died Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at her Newtonville home. She was the beloved wife and sweetheart of James "Papa" E. Murphy Sr. Born in St. Johns, Newfoundland on August 2, 1926, she first came to the United States on November 11, 1929. Her family resided in Maynard where her father worked at The American Powder Mills. During The Great Depression the family moved back to Newfoundland and on November 10, 1946 she came back to the United States and became a US citizen on July 24, 1952. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary "Molly" (O'Toole) Power, sister of the late Anne Casey, the late Gerald Power, the late Gertrude Thom, the late Mary "Doll" Ryall, the late John "Jack" Power, the late Joan Ledger and the late Edward Power. Alice worked as a nanny when she came to the United States in 1946. She was working at the A& P when she met Jim in 1948; they were married on May 7, 1950. They lived in Concord for a few years before buying their home in Newtonville in 1953. Alice and Jim, better known as Nana and Papa had many adventures during their 66 years together. They raised their 4 children in Newtonville and quickly became part of the neighborhood making lifelong friends. In 1978, they went to Ireland for the first time and went back 6 more times, taking 7 of their 11 grandchildren. Nana loved camping, playing scat, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was extremely proud to say she had 11 grandchildren and was over the moon when she could start bragging about her great grandchildren! She enjoyed bowling, ceramics, bingo, The Chateau, French fries and trips to Foxwoods. She was a Breast Cancer survivor of over 10 years. Nana is predeceased by her late son in-law James "Joe" Murphy of Rockland. She is survived by her sweetheart, Papa, her daughter, Joan of Rockland, MA; her son Francis and his wife, Pattianne of Limerick, ME; her son James Jr. of Newtonville; and her son Michael and his wife, Susan of Hull, MA. She is survived by her grandchildren Kerrin Murphy of Sagamore Beach, MA; Corrin Finnell of Rockland, MA; Erin Murphy of Orono, ME; Brendan Murphy of Rutland, VT; Jennifer Mercurio of Hudson, MA; Katlin Murphy of Bronx, NY; Matthew Murphy of Hull, MA; Mickeyla Murphy of Limerick, ME; Cailin Murphy of Limerick, ME, Tommy Murphy of Shrewsbury, MA; and Aidan Murphy of Shrewsbury, MA. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Keegan Finnell of Rockland, MA; Kiera Marshall of Rutland, VT; Ryan Murphy of Orono, ME; Maiven Finnell of Rockland, MA; Melody Marshall Murphy of Rutland, VT; and Camber Mercurio of Hudson, MA. Cemetery: Interment will follow the funeral service in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Concord. Visitation: Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 10am to 11 am at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center Service: A funeral prayer service will follow the visitation starting at 11am at Dee Funeral Home.
