Alfred C. Leonard III, age 64, passed away peacefully July 19, 2016, at his home in Concord, Mass. He was born in New York City. He is remembered for his mischievous humor, mustache, delight in finding just the right gift, and special bond with children and animals. He grew up in Haworth, N.J., and attended Northern Valley Regional High School. He competed on the track team, sang in church and school choirs, and chaperoned his sister at the Woodstock Festival.
As an engineering student, he received his bachelor's degree at Cornell University and sang baritone in the Men's Glee Club. Alfred also took classes at Stanford and received a master's from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Through his youngest sister, Diana, he was introduced to his future wife, Kathleen. They married at his parents' house in Greenwich, Conn., 33 years ago.
Alfred and Kathleen lived in Somerville, Mass., where their two sons were born. The family moved to Concord in 1992. Alfred coached and managed many of his sons' sports teams. He taught a number of years at Northeastern University's satellite campus. He was a foodie and wine enthusiast, relished extensive research on finding "the best" and lived by Zagat. He belonged to a wine club.
Alfred is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen; sons, Max and Michael; sisters, Susan (Randy) Lange and Diana Marie (Edmund) Pelzer; Aunt Patty; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Diana Leonard. He will be greatly missed by friends, family and all who knew him.
A visitation will be held Saturday, July 23, from 5-8 p.m. at Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord, Mass. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord, Mass. Donations in his memory may be made to your favorite local charity.
