Obituary

Alfred Barrett Edmunds, 89, a longtime former Weston resident and retired Weston Police Officer, died Friday, October 2nd at Rivercrest Wellness & Rehab at Newbury Court in Concord, MA. He was the beloved husband of the late Ellen M. (Manton) Edmunds who died in 1972. Born in Newton on August 23, 1926 he was the son of the late Edward and Frances (Barrett) Edmunds. He moved to Weston as a teenager and attended Weston High School. As a young man, he enjoyed activities around Norumbega Park, particularly canoeing the Charles River and dancing at the Totem Pole Ballroom. His love of dancing continued throughout his life. From 1943 to 1945, he served his country as a Private in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He wanted to become a pilot, but the war ended before he could complete the training. For twenty years, prior to his retirement in 1981, Mr. Edmunds served as a Patrolman for the Weston Police Department. Following his retirement, he became a year-round resident of Onset, where the family had been summering since the 1960s. His longtime passion for renovating houses, led him to purchase and manage numerous real estate properties over the years. A skilled mason and carpenter, he proudly built his own residences in Weston and Onset. An outdoors enthusiast, at home he enjoyed working in the yard, but when he vacationed he engaged in many adventurous activities such as boating, scuba diving, downhill skiing (which he did well into his 70's) and he biked down a mountain at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park when he was in his late 70s. In addition, his ardent love for traveling took him to destinations such as Egypt, where he rode a camel, and Thailand, where he rode an elephant. Survivors include his daughters, Pamela Edmunds of Shirley, Valerie Faubel and her husband Kenneth of Dunstable, and Angie Edmunds and her partner Michael Maxim of Clinton, his son, Alfred Brock Edmunds and his wife Olga of Malden, his grandchildren, Sandra (Wentworth) Johnson, Daniel and Elisabeth Faubel, and Vanessa and Sophia Edmunds, his sister, Maxine Breen of Weston, and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Laurie Edmunds who died in 1975, and brother to the late Phyllis Austin and Edward Edmunds, Jr. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 9th at 9 am in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. Relatives and friends are cordially invited. Burial with military honors will follow at Linwood Cemetery, Weston. Visiting hours are Thursday, October 8th from 5 to 8 pm in the Dee Funeral Home.
