Alfred Carmen Dentino, Jr., 86, of Shirley, Massachusetts, formerly of Concord, Massachusetts and Tenants Harbor, Maine, died Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at the Apple Valley Rehabilitation Center in Ayer, Massachusetts. He was the beloved husband of 58 years of the late Irene S. (Lehtinen) Dentino.
Born in Concord on August 21, 1929, he was the son of Alfred C. Dentino and Aurore (Sigman) Dentino.
After graduating from Concord High School, he joined the Navy in 1948 and served in the World War II Occupation Forces and saw action in the Korean War. While in Korea he was a Radioman aboard the destroyer USS Ernest G. Small DD838 which struck a mine while engaging the enemy off of Hungnam, killing and wounding many sailors.
After discharge from the Navy in 1956, he worked as an Electronics Test Engineer for the Acton Environmental Testing Corporation (later NTS) in Acton, MA.
Upon retirement, he and Irene moved to Tenants Harbor, ME where they lived until Irene passed away in 2013. Since then, he had been living close to his family in Shirley, MA.
An active member, and former Commander, of the American Legion Post 235 in Maynard, MA, he enjoyed world travel with Irene, attending the annual reunions of the crew of the Ernest G. Small, and sharing in the lives of his sons and grandchildren.
He is survived by four sons, Alfred W. Dentino and his wife Christine of Lancaster, MA., Stephen A. Dentino and his wife Anne of Sedgewick, ME, Robert E. Dentino of Mason, NH, and David A. Dentino and his wife Melissa of Shirley, MA., his sisters Phyliis Bruhn of Crystal MN, Carolyn Carlson of Enfield, CT, and Rosemary Goode of Jackson, NH, and five grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Robert Dentino and Doris Lalli.
Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 14th at 10 am in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. Officiating will be Reverend Austin H. Fleming, Pastor of Holy Family Parish in Concord.
Interment with military honors will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord.
Visiting hours are Sunday, December 13th from 3 to 6 pm in the Dee Funeral Home.
Concord's Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Monday, December 14th in recognition of Mr. Dentino's service to his country in the United States Navy.
Donations may be made in his name to the USS Ernest G. Small Association.
