Douglas Carmichael was the son of Scottish born Adam Carmichael, Royal Navy Commando and Jane Webster (Hamilton) Carmichael, born while his father was stationed in Malta. He received a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering as a Whitworth Senior Scholar at Trinity College Cambridge, England. Douglas worked at Bristol Siddeley, later Rolls-Royce, designing gas turbines blades for the Olympus engine used in the Vulcan V bomber and later the Concorde SST. At age 22 he personally grounded the whole British bomber fleet due to a design flaw he found in their engines. He was a Consultant at Northern Research in Cambridge MA, a research fellow and Lecturer at Imperial College, London University, England and finally, for more than 25 years, a Professor of Ocean Engineering at M.I.T. Cambridge MA. Douglas was involved with many projects including an early robot submarine, the Innovation Center and the Edgerton Lab. A long time resident of Newtonville MA, for the past 11 years he lived at Malcolm Meadows in Carlisle MA. An accomplished jazz clarinetist, he took great delight in being a member of two Jazz/Dixieland bands, The Ancient Mariners and the Newton Swing Band. In retirement he specialized in attending soccer, football, softball, and baseball games, swim meets, choral concerts, piano recitals, band concerts, and dance and drama performances of his many and talented grandchildren. "Grandad" was cheerful to the last. He was blessed with good health for 86 years, devoting his life to education and family. Douglas was predeceased by Rose (Whittaker) Carmichael, his beloved wife of 41 years. He leaves brothers, James Carmichael of Cornwall, England and Ian Carmichael of Plymouth, England. Children: Gillian Teixeira of Harvard MA, Alison Saylor of Carlisle MA, and Peter Carmichael of Carlisle MA, also 11 grandchildren: Jay Teixeira, Margo Lisi, Carly Cox, Emmie Saylor, Pammy Tsinteris, Ian Saylor, Alex Teixeira, Steven Teixeira, Genevieve Carmichael, Rose Carmichael, and Gavin Saylor, and 5 great-grandchildren: Alden Cox, Cooper Lisi, Pierson Cox, Tess Tsinteris, and Vincent Lisi.
