Obituary for John T. Foster, Jr.

John T. Foster Jr., 81, of Sandwich, MA and Naples, FL, formerly of Concord, MA, retired Lieutenant, Concord Police Department died Wednesday November 21, 2018 in Barnstable. He was the loving husband for 57 years of Linda (Baker) Foster.

Born in Concord on January 5, 1937, he was the son of the late John T. Foster and Mary Agnes (Donovan) Foster. Mr. Foster attended Concord public schools and was a 1955 graduate of Concord High School. He later attended East Coast Aero Tech. From 1957 until 1961 he served honorably in the United States Navy.

His 32 year career with the Concord Police Department began in 1961, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1993. His career was highlighted on three occasions working with the U.S. Secret Service on Presidential visits and also assisting with security on Mother Teresa’s visit to MCI Concord, an occasion that had a major impact on his life.

He was active in the community as one of the founders, along with other Concord Police Officers, of Pop Warner football. He also served terms as President of Concord Little League Baseball.

Mr. Foster was a member of the Concord Rod and Gun Club and also of the Sandwich American Legion Post, He enjoyed sports, especially the Patriots, Red Sox, Notre Dame and U.S. Navy Academy college football.

During retirement, he enjoyed his travels in his motor home, residing in Naples, Florida. In Naples, he was a member of the ROMEOS, enjoying his many friendships there, was the “chef” and served as a security liason for many Crystal Lake Park events. He also enjoyed golf, fishing and Boston Red Sox spring training games.

His greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. His many family activities included summering on Cape Cod and watching his children’s and grandchildren’s games and events. He also enjoyed traveling with friends on vacations, and working on projects around his homes.

He led by example, was tough on the outside and was a big teddy bear on the inside. His family will remember him as kind hearted, honorable and faithful man, who was the rock of his family.

In addition to his wife Linda, he is survived by 5 children, Kevin of West Dennis, Susan Stone and her husband Dan of Millis, Linda Kelly and her husband Dan of Franklin, John III and his wife Sharon of Sudbury and Nancy Sanfacon and her husband Marc of Grafton, 13 grandchildren, Dean Foster, Alex Foster, Jaime Stone, Julianne Stone, Daniel Kelly and his wife Kaillie, Courtney Kelly, Patrick Kelly, Christopher Kelly and Cameron Kelly, Samantha Foster, Hannah Foster, Nicholas Millett and Chloe Sanfacon. He was the brother of the late Mary (Foster) Gorman, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for visiting hours on Wednesday, November 28th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. His funeral will be held on Thursday, November 29th at 10 am from the Dee Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center at 11 am. Representatives of the United States Navy will present military honors following the funeral Mass. Active and retired Officers of the Concord Police Department will serve as honor guard. Burial at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Concord will be private at a later date.

Concord’s town flag will fly at half-staff on Thursday November 29th in recognition of Mr. Foster's service to his country in the United States Navy.
